Cinematic Referances

Session Notes Using the Christmas break to watch many of the films that I personally wanted to watch and gain inspiration to visually interrupt concept such as lucid nightmares, idealism etc ... One such film, in particular, is the 1985 dystopian film "Brazil". After finally watching this film carefully in order to truly understand the mindset of the protagonist of the film and his journey. I have found the character of this film is an excellent example of a modern-day person who appears to be caught in a dead-end position and resort to escapism whether it be drugs, films, dreaming or other forms of escapism to find their version of "paradise". Concept Evolution

Session Notes Returning to meet Paul Hazel once more, I understood that during our conversation and slight debate my original actions of having each image serve as a visual representation of a psychological or dream state lacked any narrative, creating weak images. So some of the keywords I absorbed from Pauls words were to... Make a visual narrative (comic book) of individual character on the airship. Each person will represent different aspects of lucid nightmares, isolations. The airship is the visual key that links each scene together. Escapism is a form of stimulation and vitiation mentally and physically. Further, as I returned home I contemplated on the narrative for these images since telling a story is an effective and simpler method of getting my points of self-awareness for your environment across. Moreover, I decided to use the pigeon character I used in my consensus reality mock-up the image and from my rough sketches of pigeon heads have a family of pigeons...

Group Meeting & Visual Idea Contemplation

Session Notes After briefly meeting Paul Hazel my project mentor I needed to collect my thoughts and return back to the dreamscape project. Since I had left my ideas for the scenes floating in the ocean for some time. Furthermore, remembering Paul's advice and my own on making most of the scenes grounded and somewhat relatable I have decided to focus on using entrapment as my visual representation for lucid nightmares. Furthermore, the consensus reality scene I created with a group of people staring on their phones will now feature a hand-drawn character will loo towards the passengers engrossed within their book or phones and will attempt to talk to them. After searching through various media such as the internet, magazines, newspapers and books I began to found various artists such as Marty Cooper a cartoonist who placed his cartoon characters in real-life environment and scenarios. Which were hilarious but his style is an excellent reference for my consensus reality s...

Analyzing Holiday Advertisements

Image
Notes from Session After contemplating over my second meeting with Paul Hazel he continued to express tha I needed to make sure all of my landscape images for my Dreamscape study should have at least two or three images relatable and grounded so that the audience can understand the intended narrative in my final images. Furthermore, after recycling some old metro newspapers I browsed through each paper to make sure there were some useful articles that I would use and I found a section in the metro called "Escape" which is a small holidays section of the paper. (figure a) Figure A I observed the holiday phonographs in the articles captured close-ups of tourists legs walking alongside a beach with the camel to represent a holiday to Morocco. In addition the loclal holiday advertisement section displayed an image of a father, mother and son (figure b)) displaying excited faces as they boarded a steampunk train for a local tour around the west midlands. Figure B ...

Paul Hazel Reviewing Proxy Concepts

Session Notes This afternoon session  I previosuly arranged to meet with Paul Hazel my academic supervizor for the indeoednat study. Moreover, after annoingly having limited time to express my concept and present my proxy image concepts Pual expressed that... Make pictures more relatable Make them grounded in reality like day drawing proxy image. People looking at mobile phones and drawn characters are talking to each other (avatars) LOOK at travel brochures, holidays adverts and observe how they sell that lifestyle to the audience. Asset Preparation & Landscape Photography Session 4

Image
Session Review  After making excellent progress in the written investigations and now visual concepts. I decided it was tme to start heading out to do some landscape photography that would be excellent backgrounds for my cg zeppelins. I originally planned to head down to the beach at either Weston-super-Mare  or Cornwall since I wanted to capture a shot of the wooden walkway and other beachfront structures. However, the train fee was ridiculous and would have been a waste of money for a damn train ride alone. So thankfully I remembered when I visited the tron bridge in Telford when I was going to primary school, and the open victorian town museum would provide a nice aesthetic look for my airships. Furthermore, after eventually finding how to get to the iron bridge from the train station, I managed to capture some good clear shots of the bridge which was fantastic although I learned I needed to arrive earlier in order to make it to the victorian town in time. ...

Asset Preparation:CG Airship Session 3

Image
Session Review After applying more features to the airship models, and continuing to experiment with the rending and lighting in Maya and post-production (figure a). Figure A I am somewhat pleased with these current test image since compared to earlier attempts as seen in figure b. I have always struggled to capture a convincing render due to the poor light work in past 3d projects. ... Asset Preparation:CG Airship Session 2

Session Review Continuing to progress with the airship model by applying various shapes and features such as pipes , exaust engines etc to create a visual practicality to the image. Furthermore,I have begin to deviate from the main airship proxy model and simply duplicate the balloon, or create other styles of airships as shown in figure a. Additionally,I am also beginning to observe existing photographs of airships in order to get a feel a feel for what perspective to place the finished 3d renders in the photographs I will be taking later in the independent project. Asset Preparation:CG Airship Session 1

Image
Session Review After developing my investigation and concepts for some time, I decided to retunr to maya and continue developing my 3d skills by modelling a few test air ship bodies. A simple cylinder with ten sub divisions were used in order to match the foolds of the ballon in the reference image (figure a). Moreover, once I applied enough edge loops on the cylinder polygon it started to match the shape of the illustration. Figure A Furthermore, the balloon was surprisingly simple to create;however the small boat in the illustration was not the intended style of airship I wanted but I was going to replicate the drawing regardless. Instead I copied the balloon and created another passenger carriage that looked more like the carriage of a train (figure b). Final Pitch Reflection & Test Shoot

Session Review After delivering my final itch and making the decision to go with the proposal of combing 3d renders and sketches with photographs. Furthermore, with the final concept pitch presented, I returned to the Jewelry Quarter in birmingham wit the Nikon D-90 and captured a dozen images of key archeitecure in the area such as the cemetry and the town clock postioned in the centre of the round about road... Independant Concept: Concept Contemplations

Image
Session Review Preparing for my final proposal for the independent piece, the on going feedback received during since the previous presentation has been beneficial from both lecturer David James and some of my peers. Moreover,my colleague Geargi introduced to the works of Sofia Monsters a Bulgarian artist who combines illustrations with photographs which I was impressed with due to the creative and fun potions the characters would be placed in the image (figure a). Figure A Furthermore, the artist Sofia's work has further reinforced my thoughts on, combining other art forms besides my 3d models with the photographs in order to convey how imagination and the ethereal influence the corporal physical environment. In addition, since the independent study will be the centre piece of my university degree I will apply 2d illustrations along with other rendering and arts styles I have passion for or new styles that convey the surreal concept effectively. Final Project Concept Thoughts

Image
Session Review A fter contemplating over nihilism I then read through an old spy craft book at home and the encrypted puzzles inspired me to combine my skills and passion for 3d modelling and sound design and create a series of interactive puzzles for my final major project. The reason behind this decision is simply due to artwork that is interactive and engages my audience will be far more interested compared to a passive piece of artwork, regardless if it intellectually challenges the viewer.
